Superbold – a book about heavy fonts. Thesis project.
Bold letters have their origin in the Industrial Revolution, when a growing demand for large and conspicuous type arose. They spread widely with the so-called wood types, which are almost extinct today. Only in the USA and Switzerland does a small handful of wood type heroes still dedicate themselves to the craft and keep this segment of type history alive – the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum being the place to go to learn more.
Another key figure is Rob Roy Kelly, best known for his research into the history, design and manufacture of nineteenth-century wood type, and a highly respected design educator whose writings on teaching a creative discipline remain an immensely valuable body of work.
